1. ELOPEMENT VS WEDDING DRESS
Before we get into how to pick the perfect dress for your wedding day we’re going to answer the question of elopement dresses vs. wedding dresses.
For the record, when we’re talking about elopements, we’re really talking about adventure elopements, because they can be two very different things.
Our kinds of elopements involve being out in nature, way out in nature. Deep into the most epic and magical places on the planet.
With that said, choosing the right dress for your adventure is key. You probably won’t just be delicately walking down a carpeted isle to an altar.
So you need to choose a dress to match the occasion, a dress that isn’t going to prevent you from having the time of your life, WHILE you’re IN it.
Now, this can all be quite confusing, believe me, we get it.
The term wedding and elopement are often used interchangeably, and this is simply because we are still very much in a transitional period where different kinds of niche weddings are growing in the industry on a large scale and it can be hard to communicate using new words to people.
- Put most simply, an elopement dress is basically a wedding dress that allows for ease of movement and comfortable wearing while in epic places.
The whole point of this and the only thing you need to remember is that you want to make sure you choose the style of dress that is going to allow you to have the EXPERIENCE you want to have.
This might mean making sure you choose something like an A-Line so you have plenty of freedom of movement. Or maybe choosing a Tea Length if you know it’s going to be HOT.
We’re here to help you with 100% of the planning and all of the buying decisions.
2. HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST DRESS FOR YOUR PARTICULAR ADVENTURE
Here’s some things to consider when choosing the best elopement dress for your adventure. I’ll talk more about each of these subjects in their respective section further down the page.
- What kind of terrain will you be in?
- rocky, sandy, snowy, icy, wet, muddy, grassy, desert, cactus, narrow trails? (more details below in style and fabric vs. environment sections)
- Do you plan on hiking, climbing or being extra active while IN your dress?
- if so you may want a dress that offers greater freedom of movement (more details below in hiking section)
- What will the season and temperature be like?
- this can determine the most comfortable thickness and coverage of the dress (more details below in style and fabric sections)
- How will you pack the dress when flying, traveling or hiking?
- for the larger styles like ballgown you’ll need to plan ahead on how to best travel and pack (more details below in the travel section)
- Will you be purchasing accessories like a veil, headpiece, belt, sash, jacket, cover up, wrap, gloves, etc?
- It’s a good idea to plan all of this before making any purchases so you get the best matched outfit (more details below in accessories section)
3. HIKING AND ADVENTURING IN AND WITH YOUR ELOPEMENT DRESS
FIRST OFF, WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO HIKE OR ADVENTURE IN YOUR WEDDING DRESS ANYWAY?
It will create such a unique and memorable experience as well as the MOST amazing photos and videos.
The stark contrast between the rugged environment and your soft and supple dress is nothing short of amazing. It creates some of the most beautiful imagery humanly possible. Ya, it’s really that good.
To see such an elegant and graceful being in such a rough place is like seeing a real life angel descended to earth.
SO, WHAT SHOULD I THINK ABOUT WHEN CHOOSING AN ELOPEMENT DRESS TO HIKE OR ADVENTURE IN?
Most adventure brides will stick to walking, hiking, and maybe a few spurts of light jogging at most. This means there will be plenty of great dress choices.
At the very least you’ll probably want to rule out the mermaid / trumpet style because of their full body fitted design which limits range of motion in the legs. This isn’t to say that it’s not possible, just that it will be slow going, especially if you have to scramble up rocks or other steep inclines.
It also can make for slow and/or dangerous descending.
For any hiking or traversing that is even remotely technical (challenging), we’ll usually rule out these designs. The workaround if you just love it so much is to pack the dress and then put it on when you get to the scenic lookout locations.
Now, how do you decide this ahead of time?
YOU’LL WANT YOUR ADVENTURE ELOPEMENT PLANNER (PHOTOGRAPHER) TO TELL YOU WHETHER OR NOT YOUR DESIGNATED WEDDING DAY TRAILS ARE SCENIC ALL THE WAY THROUGH, OR JUST AT THE END AT A SCENIC OVERLOOK.
This alone can determine whether it’s best to wear your dress while you hike or just pack it and put it on at the photo shoot location.
Consequently, this will help you to choose the best dress ahead of time for your specific adventure, by knowing what the trails are like.
If you know that your main photo areas are only scenic at the very end where the lookout is, then you can totally buy that fitted trumpet design and just pack it to the location.
So in short, talk with your adventure planner about what kind of trails and scenery you can expect.
It’s also important to consider the type of terrain you’ll be hiking through, because if you’ve got a ball gown for example, moving through narrow desert and mountain trails will prove difficult. You’ll be snagging on all kinds of bushes, trees, cacti and so on.
CHOOSING THE BEST ADVENTURE ELOPEMENT DRESS REALLY IS SOMETHING THAT SHOULD BE CONSIDERED WHILE YOUR MAPPING OUT YOUR LOCATION AND TIME OF YEAR.
Now…
You may want to take things to another level. And we’re here for it.
As if hiking in a wedding dress wasn’t enough. Maybe you’re that person who just needs a little extra out of life.
Good, because we are too.
As you can see, we’ve got a bride walking a slackline high in the air while in her elopement dress. Just…EPIC.
THESE NEXT ADVENTURE ACTIVITIES LOOK EVEN THAT MUCH MORE EPIC WHEN YOU’RE IN YOUR WEDDING ATTIRE. IT’S LITERALLY LIKE BEING IN SOME KIND OF SUPERHERO OUTFIT.
Activities like climbing or slacklining, where you need your dress to be able to accommodate a climbing harness and more dynamic movements.
You may also find yourself riding a horse, white water rafting, or 4-wheeling, in which case you’ll need to know whether you’ll be in a sidesaddle or straddle position.
And then of course there is the more extreme base jumping or skydiving in which case it’s likely you’ll be strapped to a jump master and so it will be important to know how your dress is going to perform as you float through the sky, tandem jump off a cliff, or how your full body fitted shaped dress will make the running landing…interesting.
Needless to say, make sure that if you’re going this more extreme route that you contact the professional guides to give you their advice.
All of the options above are absolutely attainable, and safe, so long as the proper preparations are made.
LET’S TALK ABOUT HOW TO PROPERLY HIKE WITH YOUR DRESS PACKED AWAY.
The main two options are;
- Pack the dress in your adventure bag.
- This will depend on the size of your dress and backpack. Wedding dresses can be quite bulky and require a much larger compartment of a bag than expected. Definitely test this while still at home.
- PRO TIP: try using a “packing cube” dedicated for the dress when inside your bag
- This will depend on the size of your dress and backpack. Wedding dresses can be quite bulky and require a much larger compartment of a bag than expected. Definitely test this while still at home.
- Pack the dress in a dedicated garment bag then secure that to the outside of your adventure bag.
- I really like this option because it keeps the dress in good form and doesn’t take up any space in your bag. Again, test this at home so you know what it takes to do this successfully.
- not all garment bags are equal, and some will definitely have more convenient fastening methods like hooks, loops, eyelets, straps and so on. Most hiking packs have some kind of bungee or cordage to make this happen regardless though. And if not you could always rig it with some separate cordage or straps yourself.

All this said, you could still just carry it wrapped up in your arms, especially if it’s a short and easy hike.
Or maybe just make your partner carry it.
The 2 main methods above really shine though if it’s a longer hike, or a more technical (challenging) hike, that involves climbing or the use of your hands to traverse.
Consider you may also have other accessories like a veil, wrap, or alternate pair of shoes in which case a proper backpack will do wonders.
PRO TIP: Have a small bag or packing cube to put your shoes in when inside the backpack, or hang them from the outside. Keeping the inside of your main pack clean goes a long way, especially on multi-day adventures.
4. THE ADVENTURE ELOPEMENT WEDDING DRESS BUSTLE
Without the wedding dress bustle, that photo we have of the epic sky-walking bride wouldn’t have been possible.
That alone is enough to convince me that knowing how to bustle a wedding dress is a LEGIT art and skill. This can literally be the difference between being able to do something amazing in your dress or not.
It can be a total game changer for granting you significantly more freedom of movement.
WHAT EXACTLY IS A BUSTLE AS IT PERTAINS TO ELOPEMENT WEDDING DRESSES?
- A bustle refers to the process of transitioning a wedding gown to function as if it has no train. “Bustle” can also function as a noun, and refer to the style once it’s sewn into the dress.
Ok, got it.
SO HOW DO YOU BUSTLE A WEDDING DRESS?
Typically this is done through a small amount of sewing or using an oversized safety pin. Both are great options.
Regarding photos you can pretty well prevent a safety pin from ever being visible, so I’d recommend this method over the sewing when possible.
Bustling can become an art, with a variety of styles to choose from depending on your dress and skill.
It’s best to have someone other than the bride do the bustling, especially if she’s wearing the dress.
We’re happy to give this a go!
And we carry a nifty little dress repair and alteration kit with us too.
THERE’S A VARIETY OF WEDDING DRESS BUSTLE TYPES.
Have a look at this post from brides.com to see them in action.
5. ELOPEMENT WEDDING DRESS STYLES VS. YOUR ENVIRONMENT
- A-Line (good balanced choice for activities + standing out in photos)
- good range of motion and movement for most activities
- potential snag magnet (snagnet?) depending on terrain
- Princess & Ball Gown (stands out the most in photos)
- decent range of motion and movement, at least for walking
- need plenty of room on all sides if your doing any kind of hiking
- can get uncomfortably warm on the inside
- Column & Sheath
- can be decent range of motion for walking
- can be easier to pack and travel with
- more comfortable in hot weather
- Tea Length (ultimate freedom to do anything)
- easy to pack and travel with
- can do just about anything you want while wearing
- great in hot weather
- may not feel like the full wedding dress experience
- Trumpet & Mermaid
- limited movement (can vary quite a bit)
- beautiful body fitted designs
- can be easier to pack and travel with
6. ELOPEMENT WEDDING DRESS FABRICS VS. YOUR ENVIRONMENT
In addition to your favorite style, consider your climate and environment to choose the perfect wedding dress fabric.
- Heavy Fabrics
- Polyester, Silk, and Satin can make for more comfort in cooler climates
- If you enjoy Satin’s look and feel you can replace it with Charmeuse for a lighter weight option
- Polyester, Silk, and Satin can make for more comfort in cooler climates
- Lightweight Fabrics
- Chiffon, Georgette, Organza, and Tulle can be more comfortable in warmer climates
- all can have good freedom of movement
- Tulle will quickly collect debris like twigs and leaves
- These fabrics will usually be great for blowing in the wind and catching dynamic light (which means epic photos and video)
- Chiffon, Georgette, Organza, and Tulle can be more comfortable in warmer climates
- Lace & Embroidery
- Can be great for hiking in and playing around
- Lots of great untraditional styles available
- They pack well because they’re usually less likely to wrinkle
7. HOW TO TRAVEL WITH A WEDDING DRESS
If you’re planning an adventure elopement wedding then it’s likely you’re going to be traveling with the dress.
For the most part this will be as simple as slipping the dress into a garment bag and being mindful of how you stow it in overhead compartments of planes or trunks of cars.
If you can, avoid folding it as much as possible, and instead lay the dress across the top of the bags that are in the storage area.
- When traveling by plane, ask to hang the dress in the closet at the front or back of the plane, typically used by the flight personnel.
If you have to fold the dress in someway to fit it into a compartment then go for as few folds as possible, or roll it up like you would a carpet to minimize wrinkles.
Also consider where you’re putting the folds and what parts of the dress are more prone to wrinkling. It may be best to fold once or twice at the bottom of the dress rather than up towards the top.
8. ADVENTURE ELOPEMENT WEDDING DRESS EMERGENCY KIT
We like to be prepared for when things go wrong. Anyone can be good at something when everything is working how it should and going according to plan.
What separates the adventure pros from the amateurs is being able to fix anything that breaks, and also come up with back-up plans and alternatives on the fly.
You’ll be happy to know that we carry a small emergency dress kit to lessen the impact of tears, stains, zipper or button failures. In the same kit we also keep extra accessories for hair.
We’re not saying that you should expect everything to remain in perfect condition with no dirt or damage.
After all, you’re on an adventure, remember?
You should certainly expect at the very least a little dirt near the bottom of your dress. 😉
We just want you to have the peace of mind that if a major wardrobe malfunction occurs, we’ve got you covered (pun intended). 😎
9. WEDDING DRESS SIZE CHARTS AND HOW THEY DIFFER FROM REGULAR DRESSES
Wedding dress sizes differ from regular dresses and it’s important to know this, mostly when shopping online.
- And we highly recommend shopping online if you’re looking for an affordable wedding dress, especially for an adventure elopement, because you’re probably going to ride it a bit rough.
WHILE THE WEDDING DRESS SIZE CHART BELOW IS QUITE ACCURATE, DESIGNERS CAN STILL SIZE DIFFERENTLY SO CONTACT THEM BEFOREHAND.
PRO TIP: It’s always better to buy a wedding dress slightly too big rather than too small.
Regarding wedding dress sizes and photos, the fit of a wedding dress goes almost entirely unnoticed. So don’t stress over having a 100% perfect fit, especially when you’re shopping online.
You can also tailor adjustments to fit your body once you get it.
There’s also a lot of online shops that will basically let you just try it on and return or exchange them until you get the desired fit. For example Azazie.com has their “At-Home Try On Program”
We’ll also be covering wedding dress alterations in more detail in the section below.
THE MOST IMPORTANT TAKEAWAY HERE IS THAT YOU’RE GOING TO WANT TO REMEMBER THAT WEDDING DRESS SIZES ARE 4 HIGHER THAN STANDARD DRESSES.
Also, make sure that when you’re trying on your dress you wear the other articles of clothing like undergarments so you have an accurate representation of what it will be like on wedding day.
- Example: If it’s going to be a winter elopement you may be wearing leggings and hiking boots, so be sure to try those on with the dress
10. WEDDING DRESS ALTERATIONS
To ensure the best fit possible almost every dress will have to be altered in some way.
- Make sure to account for this in your budget, it can range from $50-$1000 depending on how sexy you want to get. (photos don’t care too much)
Again, it’s always better to by slightly bigger than smaller and it will be much less expensive to have a seamstress “take in” (make smaller) a dress than “let out” (make bigger).
WEDDING DRESS ALTERATIONS INCLUDE;
- Basic Hemming
- Basic alterations include hemming the length, adjusting the sides of the dress, and “fine-tuning” the overall fit.
- Adding Details
- Details like sleeves, off-shoulder straps, beads, buttons, bustle, train length and lace can be added to craft your unique dream dress.
- Bustling will come in real time on wedding day though once you’re ready to get down for activities.
- Details like sleeves, off-shoulder straps, beads, buttons, bustle, train length and lace can be added to craft your unique dream dress.
If possible, buy your dress well in advance so you can give the appropriate amount of time to the alteration process.
- NOTE: It’s important to note that none of this is necessary. You are likely to find an elopement wedding dress that fits well enough ”right off the rack” and not have to spend any money at all.
Remember, the photos don’t really care much at all about a perfect fit. So if you do it, it’s more for your own comfort and perspective.
11. ELOPEMENT WEDDING DRESS ACCESSORIES
Wedding accessories can really make a big impact, specifically in the photos and video. They really just add that bit of extra to make things really stand out. Choosing the right accessories can also be a LOT of fun.
In my personal life, every little thing I own has been hand selected and carefully crafted to empower my highest self.
From my adventure tech accessories, to my adventure hat, my adventure socks, my adventure underwear, my high performance minimalist adventure sandals, literally everything is curated to make me feel like some kind of superhero of my own life’s story.
Yeah, and it’s black everything if you haven’t noticed.
It all just “goes with” each other to create this really special experience and perspective of life.
They’re also quality pieces hand selected to make my quality of life that much better.
The point is that the accessories can enhance life.
I’ll help to make you aware of what some of your options are and let you do the rest. A quick google search of any of these terms below + the word bridal or wedding will get you where you want to be.
Also recognize that a lot of these won’t be wedding specific, but still perfect for the occasion.

We also strongly promote the use of costumes, especially of the fantasy variety. Think Star Wars, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and so on!
12. ADVENTURE ELOPEMENT WEDDING VEILS
Without a doubt wedding veils are one of the most magical accessories. They add this element of beauty that isn’t found any other way.
Especially when they get to flying through the wind on a mountaintop.
Veils can be the make or break element of really feeling like your celebrating a wedding.
SHORT ANSWER: WE ALWAYS RECOMMEND AT LEAST HAVING A VEIL
They pack away fairly easily without taking up much room and can also help to diversify your photos and video.
And slow motion veils floating in the wind on video are always a hit.
HERE’S A FEW DIFFERENT TYPES OF WEDDING VEILS;
- Birdcage – 9 inch netting that drapes off the side of head
- Blusher – short and worn over face before ceremony and flipped / removed after
- Cathedral – sweeps to the floor, often 10+ feet long from headpiece
- Chapel – formal veil that extends to floor, often 7+ feet long
- Double Tier – two layer veil, sometimes with blusher as the second
- Elbow – elbow length veil
- Fingertip – fingertip length veil
- Flyaway – multi-layered veil that just passes the shoulders
- Mantilla – Spanish-style circular piece of lace that frames the face
- Pouf – tulle or netting that fastens to a comb or headpiece for height
- Waltz (Ballet) – knee to ankle length veil
Here’s some trending wedding veils of 2021.
Again, we recommend at least having a veil with you just so that you at least have the option when you’re out on that adventure elopement.
13. ELOPEMENT WEDDING DRESS PRICING (AND AFFORDABLE WEDDING DRESSES)
Let’s talk about elopement wedding dress pricing, including how it relates to your photography.
Everyone is obviously going to have different budgets, fortunately, when it comes to adventure elopements, the best decision is usually to go with a more affordable wedding dress.
The last thing you want is to feel like you can’t have fun on your adventure because you spent several thousand dollars on a dress and don’t want to trash it. #trashthedress please.
Now you can of course have an “adventure elopement wedding” and still keep your dress in great shape, for the record.
But if you want to do some hiking for those epic magical photos and video then you’re probably going to get a little dirty, at least depending on your chosen destination.
SO, for most people we are going to recommend you find a dress for $100-$500 at one of the following amazing sellers;
PRO TIP: Search for “Maxi” dresses too, they will be significantly cheaper and can have that wedding vibe.
And don’t be afraid to buy second hand. Buying second hand wedding dresses can also be a window into higher quality dresses for lower prices.
I don’t want it to seem like I’m saying that high quality wedding dresses shouldn’t be worn on an adventure elopement wedding. There are certain qualities that can really enhance your experience, namely COMFORT.
High quality designer dresses are often more comfortable and constructed in a way to be softer, more comforting, less restricting, and less itchy than the lower prices counterparts.
HOWEVER
If a dress doesn’t fit well, and you haven’t had it altered, even a high quality dress can result in a poor experience compared to a perfectly fitting lower cost dress.
So, we recommend doing what you can to get the fit as good as possible, and do consider the activities you’ll be engaged in on your adventure please. 🤠
And consider this, the more money you save on a wedding dress, the more money you can invest into additional coverage for photo and video.
For example, you could literally add a whole second day to your coverage so that an entirely new vibe can be documented while you’re on your once in a lifetime adventure!
I know that I’m obviously bias, but photos and video last an eternity, a wedding dress is usually worn once.
THAT SAID
If you’ve got your eye on the perfect high designer dress then scroll down to the top wedding dress designer section. Enjoy!

16. OUR FAVORITE ADVENTURE ELOPEMENT WEDDING DRESSES
Here’s my favorite budget affordable wedding dress, I even bought one in black in case we wanted to use it for a shoot. It’s even called “Awaken My Love.” Love it.
(I swear, if you had told me 5 years ago I’d be writing an article about adventure elopement wedding dresses I would’ve told you you’re f***in crazy. Oh life. I sure do love what I do though. Never would’ve guessed…)
Modern and Boho Wedding Dresses would be some of our top styles as well.
That said, there are always dresses we love from every style and genre, but most of the ones we’ve really enjoyed fall under the above categories.
Make sure you choose what YOU love.
We’re happy to give you our professional opinion if you want to send us an email with the dress you’re thinking about buying so we can help you make an informed decision.
17. [BONUS] MEN’S ELOPEMENT WEDDING OUTFIT IDEAS
It may be obvious but I’d say go all black. 😉🏴☠️
I also really love the “spiritual viking” aesthetic, if we could call it that. I bet you know what I’m talking about though.
Thirdly, I encourage costumes any opportunity I get because they REALLY elevate the magic on an adventure.
If none of the above options are for you then maybe just consider being thoughtful about creating a complete and coherent aesthetic, and one that will compliment your environment, and your partner.
The black suit in the photo above is by Lululemon, a high quality athletic clothing company which I wear almost exclusively. It’s that good.
You made it to the end! You must know f***in everything by now.
You’re going to tame the wedding dragon yet. 🐉💍
