For the record, when we’re talking about elopements, we’re really talking about adventure elopements, because they can be two very different things.

Our kinds of elopements involve being out in nature, way out in nature. Deep into the most epic and magical places on the planet.

With that said, choosing the right dress for your adventure is key. You probably won’t just be delicately walking down a carpeted isle to an altar.

So you need to choose a dress to match the occasion, a dress that isn’t going to prevent you from having the time of your life, WHILE you’re IN it.

Now, this can all be quite confusing, believe me, we get it.

The term wedding and elopement are often used interchangeably, and this is simply because we are still very much in a transitional period where different kinds of niche weddings are growing in the industry on a large scale and it can be hard to communicate using new words to people.

• Put most simply, an elopement dress is basically a wedding dress that allows for ease of movement and comfortable wearing while in epic places.

The whole point of this and the only thing you need to remember is that you want to make sure you choose the style of dress that is going to allow you to have the EXPERIENCE you want to have.

This might mean making sure you choose something like an A-Line so you have plenty of freedom of movement. Or maybe choosing a Tea Length if you know it’s going to be HOT.

Most adventure brides will stick to walking, hiking, and maybe a few spurts of light jogging at most. This means there will be plenty of great dress choices.

At the very least you’ll probably want to rule out the mermaid / trumpet style because of their full body fitted design which limits range of motion in the legs. This isn’t to say that it’s not possible, just that it will be slow going, especially if you have to scramble up rocks or other steep inclines.

It also can make for slow and/or dangerous descending.

For any hiking or traversing that is even remotely technical (challenging), we’ll usually rule out these designs. The workaround if you just love it so much is to pack the dress and then put it on when you get to the scenic lookout locations.

Now, how do you decide this ahead of time?

YOU’LL WANT YOUR ADVENTURE ELOPEMENT PLANNER (PHOTOGRAPHER) TO TELL YOU WHETHER OR NOT YOUR DESIGNATED WEDDING DAY TRAILS ARE SCENIC ALL THE WAY THROUGH, OR JUST AT THE END AT A SCENIC OVERLOOK.

This alone can determine whether it’s best to wear your dress while you hike or just pack it and put it on at the photo shoot location.

Consequently, this will help you to choose the best dress ahead of time for your specific adventure, by knowing what the trails are like.

If you know that your main photo areas are only scenic at the very end where the lookout is, then you can totally buy that fitted trumpet design and just pack it to the location.

So in short, talk with your adventure planner about what kind of trails and scenery you can expect.

It’s also important to consider the type of terrain you’ll be hiking through, because if you’ve got a ball gown for example, moving through narrow desert and mountain trails will prove difficult. You’ll be snagging on all kinds of bushes, trees, cacti and so on.

Activities like climbing or slacklining, where you need your dress to be able to accommodate a climbing harness and more dynamic movements.

You may also find yourself riding a horse, white water rafting, or 4-wheeling, in which case you’ll need to know whether you’ll be in a sidesaddle or straddle position.

And then of course there is the more extreme base jumping or skydiving in which case it’s likely you’ll be strapped to a jump master and so it will be important to know how your dress is going to perform as you float through the sky, tandem jump off a cliff, or how your full body fitted shaped dress will make the running landing…interesting.

Needless to say, make sure that if you’re going this more extreme route that you contact the professional guides to give you their advice.

All of the options above are absolutely attainable, and safe, so long as the proper preparations are made.

LET’S TALK ABOUT HOW TO PROPERLY HIKE WITH YOUR DRESS PACKED AWAY.

The main two options are;

1. Pack the dress in your adventure bag.
   • This will depend on the size of your dress and backpack. Wedding dresses can be quite bulky and require a much larger compartment of a bag than expected. Definitely test this while still at home.
     • PRO TIP: try using a “packing cube” dedicated for the dress when inside your bag
2. Pack the dress in a dedicated garment bag then secure that to the outside of your adventure bag.
   • I really like this option because it keeps the dress in good form and doesn’t take up any space in your bag. Again, test this at home so you know what it takes to do this successfully.
     • not all garment bags are equal, and some will definitely have more convenient fastening methods like hooks, loops, eyelets, straps and so on. Most hiking packs have some kind of bungee or cordage to make this happen regardless though. And if not you could always rig it with some separate cordage or straps yourself.

All this said, you could still just carry it wrapped up in your arms, especially if it’s a short and easy hike.

Or maybe just make your partner carry it.

The 2 main methods above really shine though if it’s a longer hike, or a more technical (challenging) hike, that involves climbing or the use of your hands to traverse.

Consider you may also have other accessories like a veil, wrap, or alternate pair of shoes in which case a proper backpack will do wonders.

PRO TIP: Have a small bag or packing cube to put your shoes in when inside the backpack, or hang them from the outside. Keeping the inside of your main pack clean goes a long way, especially on multi-day adventures.

WHAT EXACTLY IS A BUSTLE AS IT PERTAINS TO ELOPEMENT WEDDING DRESSES?

• A bustle refers to the process of transitioning a wedding gown to function as if it has no train. “Bustle” can also function as a noun, and refer to the style once it’s sewn into the dress.

Ok, got it.

SO HOW DO YOU BUSTLE A WEDDING DRESS?

Typically this is done through a small amount of sewing or using an oversized safety pin. Both are great options.

Regarding photos you can pretty well prevent a safety pin from ever being visible, so I’d recommend this method over the sewing when possible.

7. HOW TO TRAVEL WITH A WEDDING DRESS

If you’re planning an adventure elopement wedding then it’s likely you’re going to be traveling with the dress.

For the most part this will be as simple as slipping the dress into a garment bag and being mindful of how you stow it in overhead compartments of planes or trunks of cars.

If you can, avoid folding it as much as possible, and instead lay the dress across the top of the bags that are in the storage area.

• When traveling by plane, ask to hang the dress in the closet at the front or back of the plane, typically used by the flight personnel.

If you have to fold the dress in someway to fit it into a compartment then go for as few folds as possible, or roll it up like you would a carpet to minimize wrinkles.

Also consider where you’re putting the folds and what parts of the dress are more prone to wrinkling. It may be best to fold once or twice at the bottom of the dress rather than up towards the top.

8. ADVENTURE ELOPEMENT WEDDING DRESS EMERGENCY KIT

We like to be prepared for when things go wrong. Anyone can be good at something when everything is working how it should and going according to plan.

Wedding dress sizes differ from regular dresses and it’s important to know this, mostly when shopping online.

• And we highly recommend shopping online if you’re looking for an affordable wedding dress, especially for an adventure elopement, because you’re probably going to ride it a bit rough.

WHILE THE WEDDING DRESS SIZE CHART BELOW IS QUITE ACCURATE, DESIGNERS CAN STILL SIZE DIFFERENTLY SO CONTACT THEM BEFOREHAND.

PRO TIP: It’s always better to buy a wedding dress slightly too big rather than too small.

Regarding wedding dress sizes and photos, the fit of a wedding dress goes almost entirely unnoticed. So don’t stress over having a 100% perfect fit, especially when you’re shopping online.

You can also tailor adjustments to fit your body once you get it.

There’s also a lot of online shops that will basically let you just try it on and return or exchange them until you get the desired fit. For example Azazie.com has their “At-Home Try On Program”

THE MOST IMPORTANT TAKEAWAY HERE IS THAT YOU’RE GOING TO WANT TO REMEMBER THAT WEDDING DRESS SIZES ARE 4 HIGHER THAN STANDARD DRESSES.

Also, make sure that when you’re trying on your dress you wear the other articles of clothing like undergarments so you have an accurate representation of what it will be like on wedding day.

• Example: If it’s going to be a winter elopement you may be wearing leggings and hiking boots, so be sure to try those on with the dress

10. WEDDING DRESS ALTERATIONS

To ensure the best fit possible almost every dress will have to be altered in some way.

• Make sure to account for this in your budget, it can range from $50-$1000 depending on how sexy you want to get. (photos don’t care too much)

Again, it’s always better to by slightly bigger than smaller and it will be much less expensive to have a seamstress “take in” (make smaller) a dress than “let out” (make bigger).

WEDDING DRESS ALTERATIONS INCLUDE;

1. Basic Hemming
   • Basic alterations include hemming the length, adjusting the sides of the dress, and “fine-tuning” the overall fit.
2. Adding Details
   • Details like sleeves, off-shoulder straps, beads, buttons, bustle, train length and lace can be added to craft your unique dream dress.
     • Bustling will come in real time on wedding day though once you’re ready to get down for activities.

If possible, buy your dress well in advance so you can give the appropriate amount of time to the alteration process.

• NOTE: It’s important to note that none of this is necessary. You are likely to find an elopement wedding dress that fits well enough ”right off the rack” and not have to spend any money at all.

Remember, the photos don’t really care much at all about a perfect fit. So if you do it, it’s more for your own comfort and perspective.

So, we recommend doing what you can to get the fit as good as possible, and do consider the activities you’ll be engaged in on your adventure please. 🤠

Here’s my favorite budget affordable wedding dress, I even bought one in black in case we wanted to use it for a shoot. It’s even called “Awaken My Love.” Love it.

(I swear, if you had told me 5 years ago I’d be writing an article about adventure elopement wedding dresses I would’ve told you you’re f***in crazy. Oh life. I sure do love what I do though. Never would’ve guessed…)

Modern and Boho Wedding Dresses would be some of our top styles as well.

That said, there are always dresses we love from every style and genre, but most of the ones we’ve really enjoyed fall under the above categories.

I also really love the “spiritual viking” aesthetic, if we could call it that. I bet you know what I’m talking about though.

Thirdly, I encourage costumes any opportunity I get because they REALLY elevate the magic on an adventure.

If none of the above options are for you then maybe just consider being thoughtful about creating a complete and coherent aesthetic, and one that will compliment your environment, and your partner.
